My postdoctoral project investigates how the eighteenth-century British novel developed strategies for immersion, that is, giving readers a sense of “being there” in the fictional world, through translations from the French and critical encounters across the Channel. In my previous project, “Rules of Old”, I investigated more broadly how the neoclassical framework of the “rules of poetics” (in particular poetic justice, the unities and decorum) contributed to the narrative shape which the British novel took in the eighteenth century, with a series of case studies including novels by Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding and Charlotte Lennox.
