My research deals with the presence of the English Gothic Novel in early 19th century France and the creative ways in which this genre was reappropriated by female novelist George Sand. My doctoral thesis dealt with Sand’s novels between the 1830 and 1848 Revolutions, and posits that Sand’s use of the genre advances ideological concerns on the position of women under the Napoleonic Code, as well as on the unfulfilled Revolutionary Ideals of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. I am also particularly interested in the interface between French Romanticism and the Gothic.
