I specialise on the high aristocracy on the borderlands between France and the Empire, 16th to 18th centuries, with a particular focus on the Duchy of Lorraine, its ruling family, and concepts of ‘national’ identity (or trans-nationalism) amongst its court elites.

I am also interested in comparisons between noble groups in Britain and France in this period, and in particular those who lived far away from courtly centres of power, in the far Northwest of England, and on borderlands.

I am interested in royal courts, ceremonial, and elite women, especially dowagers and widows.
